Abstract |
The dewlap display in Anolis lizards has been a subject of conjecture and analysis in recent years due to its occurrence in social interactions and its probable function in communication. Anolis carolinensis females were given a choice between normal red-dewlapped males and males with green-painted dewlaps; in a series of experiments, the males displayed against red or green background coloration. Results indicated that females chose to approach male lizards with the normal red dewlap. Contrast of the dewlap with background coloration, which makes the dewlap more conspicuous, also has a significant influence on the female's choice.
