Abstract |
Results are presented for a comparative study of solar radiation over the period 1968-1974 at the three monitoring sites Barrow (Alaska), Rockville (Maryland), and Balboa (Canal Zone, Panama). The data are collected in 100-nm bands by precision pyranometers with filter domes. The results are discussed in terms of total irradiance and spectral quality. Total irradiance data are analyzed using fourth-order regressions and multiple correlation to show trends and to make comparisons with 'handbook' computations. Spectral distribution at each of the three monitoring sites is examined by using the 100-nm bandwidths to obtain ratios between the bands and the trends in these ratios. Also, a comparison is made of the 100-nm bands using periodic functions and regression equations. It is shown that one cannot compute the daily insolation on a horizontal surface with variations of less than 50% from some mean value. There are both major differences in the spectral quality of daylight from place to place and large variations at any one place.
