Abstract
Here I describe an irradiation accident experienced by the use of a UV-Reptile Mega-Ray bulb which had occurred during an attempt to provide an optimal light environment for raising radiated tortoises, which resulted in carapace lesions of various degrees. At the beginning these lesions were spotted only by a minor irregular pattern of wider, non-pigmented spots between or at the edge of the scutes. The main conclusion from this experience is not that this type of high UV irradiation does not provide any advantage for raising and keeping tortoises, but that this special type of Mega-Ray bulb should be used only in combination with an additional infrared bulb.

Reptiles, Testudines, Testudinidae, Astrochelys radiata, tortoises, pigmentation, UV irradiation, infrared irradiation, carapace growth.
